The route
Most drivers head north via Nashik and Dhule, join the Agra–Mumbai road towards Sendhwa, cross into Madhya Pradesh and continue to Dhamnod, turning east for the final 13–15 km to Maheshwar. The road crosses the Satpura hills before dropping to the Narmada. Check live navigation before you start — other routes via Ahmednagar can suit some starting points.
Plan your stops
- Start early — leave Pune by 5–6 AM to reach before dark.
- Breakfast and fuel around Nashik or Dhule.
- Break the journey if travelling with elders: a night in Nashik or Dhule makes it easy.
- Avoid driving the ghat sections at night when trucks are heavy.
Make it a pilgrimage circuit
Maharashtrian families often combine Maheshwar with two Jyotirlingas: drive to Ujjain for Mahakaleshwar darshan, continue to Omkareshwar the next morning, and stay the night in Maheshwar before driving home. See the 3-day Ujjain–Omkareshwar–Maheshwar plan.
