A ruler remembered for justice

Ahilyabai held open court in the Rajwada, hearing petitions in person. Accounts from her time describe a stable, prosperous state with fair taxes and safe roads.

Builder across India

She funded temples, ghats, wells and rest houses at pilgrimage sites across India — including the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and work at Somnath, Gaya and many other places. In Maheshwar she built the ghats, temples and chhatris that line the river today.

The weaving legacy

Ahilyabai is credited with bringing weavers to Maheshwar in the 18th century. The Maheshwari saree, with its reversible border, grew from that tradition and received a GI tag in 2012. See our saree guide.

On 31 May the town marks her birth anniversary with processions, prayers at the Rajwada and programmes on the ghats.
