Sahastradhara is 3–5 km from Maheshwar, where the Narmada spreads over a wide bed of rock and splits into many small streams and falls. Go between October and March, in the morning or late afternoon, and stay well away from the water when the river is high in the monsoon.
What is Sahastradhara?
Sahastra means a thousand and dhara means stream. Here the river widens over a rocky bed and breaks into dozens of channels, rapids and pools. Local legend links the spot to the thousand-armed king Sahastrarjuna of ancient Mahishmati, who is said to have held back the Narmada with his arms.
