Nimar Utsav is Maheshwar's biggest cultural festival: folk music, dance and lamps on the Narmada ghats around Kartik Purnima. In 2026 it runs from 22 to 24 November, with free entry and evening programmes from 6 PM. Rooms in town fill quickly, so book now.

What is Nimar Utsav?

Nimar is the region of Madhya Pradesh along the lower Narmada, and Maheshwar is its cultural heart. Nimar Utsav celebrates it: the songs, dances, crafts and food of the Nimari people, staged on the ghats below Ahilya Fort with the river as the backdrop.

The festival is listed by Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism's website, with Devi Ahilya Ghat as the venue and free admission. It runs for three days and coincides with Kartik Purnima, the full moon of the month of Kartik and one of the holiest nights for a dip in the Narmada.

What happens at the festival

  • Folk music and dance: Nimari folk singers and dance troupes perform on a stage on the ghats, often with artists invited from across India, alongside folk drama and cultural performances. We'll add the 2026 line-up when it is published.
  • Deepdaan on the Narmada: at dusk, thousands of small lamps are floated on the river. On Kartik Purnima night the whole riverfront glows.
  • Holy dip: pilgrims bathe in the Narmada at dawn on Kartik Purnima. The ghats are busiest from sunrise to mid-morning.
  • Crafts and food stalls: Maheshwari handloom, local snacks and festival food along the approach to the ghats (stalls vary from year to year).
  • Boat events: some years include boating events on the river; check the official programme.

Where to watch

The best view of the main stage is from the upper steps of Ahilya Ghat, close to the fort walls. The programme starts at 6 PM; arrive by 5 PM to get a seat on the steps. For the lamps on the water, the quieter Peshwa Ghat upstream gives you the whole riverfront in one view. A boat on the Narmada gives the most memorable angle of all — book it in the afternoon, as boats are in demand on festival evenings.

Tips for visiting

  • Book your room early. Maheshwar has a limited number of rooms, and festival nights sell out.
  • Come on foot. Roads near the fort are crowded in the evening. From Hotel Shivalay Palace the fort is a 10-minute walk.
  • Carry a shawl. November evenings by the river are cool.
  • Dress modestly and wear footwear that's easy to slip off for the ghats and temples.
  • Photography: a tripod helps for the lamps, but don't block the steps. Never use flash during the aarti.
  • Stay an extra day to see Maheshwar calm again the morning after.
