Mahashivratri falls on Saturday, 6 March 2027. In Maheshwar, devotees bathe in the Narmada at dawn, offer water and bel leaves at the Shiva temples on the fort and ghats, and keep vigil through the night. Expect crowds; book your room early and plan to walk rather than drive near the ghats.

How Maheshwar celebrates
Maheshwar's name itself refers to Shiva (Maheshwara). On Mahashivratri the Ahilyeshwar temple in the fort and the shrines along the ghats fill from early morning. Devotees take a dip in the Narmada, carry water to the lingams, and offer bel leaves, milk and flowers. In the evening the aarti is larger, and many stay awake through the night with bhajans.
Plan around the crowds
- Arrive a day early. Roads near the ghats get busy from the afternoon before.
- Book early. Rooms in town fill weeks ahead.
- Walk, don't drive to the fort and ghats; parking near the river is limited.
- Bathe at dawn when the ghat is calmer.
- Keep valuables minimal and keep children close in the crowd.
Combine with Omkareshwar
Many pilgrims visit Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga (65–75 km, 1.5–2 hours) on the same trip. On Mahashivratri itself queues there can be very long; visiting a day before or after is easier. See Omkareshwar to Maheshwar.
